A lot of us have been delighted by Roald Dahl's many books illustrated by Quentin Blake. I have always found them brilliant and effortless.
I was most surprised to learn that Dahl wrote and rewrote, struggling over every word. Considering how much I struggle when writing, I find this somewhat encouraging. Roald Dahl followed a very strict daily routine, doing the same things every day at the same time. His magic ingredient might have been his one gin and tonic with lunch and his chocolate bar chosen from a red plastic box after lunch. I might have to try that.
His stories are delightfully politically incorrect. My favorite one comes from his Revolting Rhymes book—Jack And The Beanstalk. A You Tube film was made based on the original illustrations of Quentin Blake, with the voices of Timothy West and Prunella Scales.
The story is so cleverly written and illustrated that it isn’t remotely revolting. After watching this You Tube, please go to my gallery and check out if gin and tonics plus chocolate bars are helping my writing.
