AN ILLUSTRATED TALK WITH MAURICE SENDAK

Unlike millions of people, I heard Maurice Sendak’s interview on “Fresh Air” with Terry Gross for the first time the other day. I am sharing this interview, as I feel sorry for the millions of other people who have missed out on this delight.

The interview is poignant and sentimental. What makes it extra special, are of course the illustrations by The New York Times' Christoph Niemann, inspired by Sendak. There is clearly such a personal connection to Sendak's characters and message.

This is a page from my FRITZY BANG BANG DOES CLEANUP Color and Write Story.

On this page, we have caught Fritzy Bang Bang and his friend Woof swooshing down on a mission to save the ocean.

As you can see, I had fun coloring it in and writing silly comments. If you go to my Color and Write Stories Page you will find the full story and others. You can download them for free and then color and write your own version.

THROWBACK THURSDAY: REMORAS APPEAR

Remoras Appear, by Elizabeth B Martin

These drawings were supposed to be part of a series (one must think big!) of an intrepid team saving the oceans.

Last week’s TBT showed the team starting out on their mission in their Super Sonic Sunny Sub to save a baby orca who has lost its mother. Quite soon, a huge shape overshadows the Super Sonic Sunny Sub. Ernest is the only one who realizes it is a basking shark. They are the second largest in the world. It is covered with remoras.

By this time in the story, I thought I might try speech bubbles and tear out pages from Ernest’s diary. Have the book sort of look like The Magic School Bus series. At the time I didn’t realize I was drawing think bubbles!

Are they about to be attacked by the shark? If you want to find out, you will have to check out my TBT this following Thursday. You can also go back to my site and see the first six TBTs showing this book.

THE SUPER SONIC SUNNY SUB SHAPED AFTER THE MOLA-MOLA

Many of the books I have written have to do with the oceans. The oceans cover three quarters of the earth and are in danger. Considering we get our oxygen from the oceans, this isn’t promising for our future.

I would love to have succeeded in writing a series of children’s book adventures in the ocean. It is important that we trigger children’s imagination and interest. They are the scientists of the future.

So far, I have had lots of fun trying, but nothing has been quite right. Writing children’s books is not for the faint of heart!

The Mola-Mola, or Sunfish

The Mola-Mola, or Sunfish

I am fascinated by the Mola-Mola, so in one of my efforts I incorporated its shape into the design of my Super Sonic Sunny Sub. This fish is a remarkable animal. When it hatches, a Mola-Mola is the size of a pinhead but will grow to be the heaviest bony fish in the ocean. This amazing fish is fascinating and definitely quite endangered. I thought it should get some attention.

I find the Mola-Mola has a friendly round shape perfect for a Super Sonic Sunny Sub for young children. See what you think and please check out some of my other water adventures in my gallery.

As a child I remember the thrill of receiving a magazine or gift through the mail. BookWormz is a brand new company that posts enchanting boxes of books and a carefully selected gift to add to the excitement. http://www.bookwormz.com.au/subscribe/

Each box contains a minimum of two expertly curated, age-appropriate books your child will love. BookWormz works closely with all key children’s book publishers in Australia to make sure they select the best books for their boxes and, because they select new titles, they minimize the chance of sending you something you already own and love.

Each box will fill your child with as much excitement as possible when they receive their box. As well as their brand new books to read and keep, they will also find a carefully selected gift, designed to spark their creativity. BookWormz also packs each box with materials to take part in their monthly coloring competition, as well as a parent card with activities and literacy tips related to each book, to help you get the most from reading aloud to your child.

This month, I have had the pleasure of contributing the image for the coloring competition. Please check out my site for my other illustrations in my gallery.
