MERMAIDS IN THE OCEAN

Mermaids in the Ocean, by Elizabeth B Martin

This illustration was for a book about Zoe and her sister Lilly. Zoe likes to play superhero and her helper. Her helper was of course her little sister Lilly. Lots of squabbling followed. In this story, they are Superhero mermaids and are saving the oceans. The book is full of make believe play and endless craft projects as they first paint their ocean and then make all the sea animals before diving into it in their super sub.

Saving the oceans is a recurring theme in many of my books. The polluting of the oceans and our future lack of oxygen is of great concern to me.

REVOLTING RHYMES by ROALD DAHL

Revolting Rhymes, by Roald Dahl

Revolting Rhymes, by Roald Dahl

A lot of us have been delighted by Roald Dahl's many books illustrated by Quentin Blake. I have always found them brilliant and effortless.

I was most surprised to learn that Dahl wrote and rewrote, struggling over every word. Considering how much I struggle when writing, I find this somewhat encouraging. Roald Dahl followed a very strict daily routine, doing the same things every day at the same time. His magic ingredient might have been his one gin and tonic with lunch and his chocolate bar chosen from a red plastic box after lunch. I might have to try that.

His stories are delightfully politically incorrect. My favorite one comes from his Revolting Rhymes book—Jack And The Beanstalk. A You Tube film was made based on the original illustrations of Quentin Blake, with the voices of Timothy West and Prunella Scales.

The story is so cleverly written and illustrated that it isn’t remotely revolting. After watching this You Tube, please go to my gallery and check out if gin and tonics plus chocolate bars are helping my writing.

THROWBACK THURSDAY: WOOF FINDING SUNNY

Woof Finding Sunny, Illustration by Elizabeth B Martin

These drawings were supposed to be the beginning to a series (one must think big!) of an intrepid team going on adventures and saving the oceans.

Woof is the team member who lives in San Francisco. The rest live on the Super Sonic Sunny Sub. The book starts with Woof finding a toy sunfish on the beach. He cleans it up and cuddles with it in bed. This toy is called Sunny and of course is no ordinary toy. When there is danger in the ocean, it glows and sends out signals. Woof, then guided by Sunny, finds his way to the Super Sonic Sunny Sub and is good to go on the mission.

MR. RUMPLE'S PET STORE

Mr. Rumple's Pet Store, Illustration by Elizabeth B Martin

I had always wanted to do a book with magic spells. I imagined a sort of Harry Potter primer for little ones. I am an author/illustrator and could see a path to fame and riches. This book is about a pet store in which the pets turn the customers into fish so as not to get sold. They want to stay together.

One of the problems was I couldn’t stop Mr. Rumple from taking over the book. He was so endearing and more interesting than the protagonists. Children mostly don’t want to read about adults in picture books. You can see this fun magic romp for free in my gallery in a slide show.
